Takuhi Shrine [Nishinoshimacho]
Where the God of Maritime Safety watches over the sea
Takuhi Shrine was well-known for its god of maritime safety during the Edo Period, when the Kitamaebune (North-bound Ships) prospered, and has been painted by famous artists of the Edo Period, Hiroshige Ando and Hokusai Katsushika. The main shrine is the oldest wooden building in Oki, and though it is built in a stone grotto, the materials were processed in Osaka and built on site, an innovative construction method that would nowadays be called prefabricated building.
